Remember Ched Evans who went to prison for rape (if u miss read here) has been prevented from returning to football
by 'mob-like behaviour', the co-chairman of Sheffield United has said. Jim Phipps who is angry and upset that the club have been forced to retract their offer to allow convicted rapist Ched Evans to train with them. He argued that footballers should also be entitled to the same right of rehabiliation as other offenders but also acknowledged that his 'principals are not the only thing that matter'. His comments came after the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) said Evans should be given an opportunity to 'return to the job he was trained to do'.
The club last week agreed to let their former striker to use the facilities in order to aid his rehabilitation following his release from prison. But the decision which was met with a widespread criticism which saw four patrons of the club to resign. Olympic heptathlon gold medal winner Jessica Hills also asked that her name be removed from the one of the stands at Bramall Lane if the club were to re-sign Evans. The controversy which drove Sheffield United to last night withdraw their offer to allow the 25 year old use their facilities to train. But Mr Phipps insisted that footballers should be given the same opportunity of the rehabilitation as other offenders.
He said; The influence of a mob-like behaviour has made it difficult to take the simple step of allowing Ched to train, 'I am angry that we are unable to get a chance to do for this footballer what should be done.
