Mubarak (86) who ruled the country for 29 years was convicted in 2012 of issuing orders to kill peaceful protesters during the country's 2011 uprising and was sentenced to life in prison which he appealed and was granted a new trial last year. Mubarak still has a three year sentence for previous conviction of embezzlement but it's not clear when he would be freed.

Presecutors have the option of appealing the acquittal decision.
